While I may not fully understand the accomplishment — even as an avid gamer for the last three-plus decades — I can still appreciate what it means to become the first person to achieve something that was only thought to be “theoretically possible.”
Willis Gibson, a 13-year-old competitive Tetris player, recently “broke the game” when he advanced so far in the NES version of the puzzle game that it froze. In a feeling I can relate to, Gibson dropped the controller and started hyperventilating upon realizing what he had just done. The kill screen had only been achieved by an artificial intelligence a few years ago and was only thought to be possible if a human player could keep up with the speed of the falling blocks at the higher levels.
As someone who last played Tetris on their Game Boy in the early 1990s, it is fun to see the game being competitively played some 30 years later. Now if we can just get Caveman Games to make a comeback…
