The brain is the most complex organ in our body, not to mention the most important when it comes to perceiving our body’s needs and wellbeing. However, sometimes we need to trick the mind if we want to get a different result from what eons of evolution has told us is right.
The mind trick for weight loss may be coming in the form of a motorized pill that can stimulate stretch receptors in the stomach that sense when it is distended and create a sense of fullness. Researchers at MIT recently unveiled VIBES (Vibrating Ingestible BioElectronic Stimulator) in Science Advances after studies showed pigs who were given the pill had stimulated the release of hormones that signal fullness and reduced overall food intake by about 40%. Also, unlike drugs with commercials that rattle off a bunch of side effects as quickly as possible, no adverse effects or discomfort were observed in the animals.
According to the report, the pill is expected to be in the cents to dollar range and could even be implanted to get by the “daily-intake” scenario. Talk about an automated appetite!
