One of the worst things about being a sports journalist and covering your favorite teams was that there was no cheering allowed in the press box. I certainly get the point of the rule, but that didn’t make it any easier to abstain from getting excited. 

Ross Bennett found himself in a similar situation earlier this week when, while attending a Wolverhampton Wanderers FA Cup game with his son, was asked to fill in as fourth official and work the substitution board. The original referee suffered an injury mid-match, so Bennett — who is a 12-and-under ref himself — offered to stand in and work the board in the match’s waning minutes. And, as the rules state, he was unable to cheer when the Wanderers scored the game-winner in extra time. 

Fortunately for Bennett, he will have another opportunity to cheer at next round’s game. Wish I knew what that felt like…
