It might seem like the NetZero Insider team devotes a lot of time covering the offshore wind industry as it takes hold in the United States.

That’s because we have been, lately. Billions of dollars and billions of watts are riding on each of these proposals, not to mention a large part of the emissions-reduction strategies of the federal government and some states.

Our New York/New England bureau chief, John Cropley, attended the New York-New Jersey Offshore Wind Supply Forum in New York City and brought back three stories:

  • The two neighboring states, which have some of the nation’s most ambitious offshore wind goals, increasingly are collaborating to develop an industry ecosystem rather than competing for individual pieces of it.

  • BloombergNEF offshore wind analyst Chelsea Jean-Michel told attendees that the growing pains the industry is experiencing in the United States should be temporary, and that there is a lot to be excited and optimistic about.

  • Representatives of two quite different New York companies shared their experiences with offshore wind. It has been a very positive time, though one of the executives, an ironworker by trade, concludes that living at sea for weeks at a time will not appeal to some of the skilled workers needed for construction and maintenance.

In other offshore wind news, Massachusetts correspondent Jon Lamson reports that Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island agreed to push back the deadline in their coordinated offshore wind solicitation from late January to late March in hopes for more clarity on critical financial details such as tax credits and interest rate trends.

Additionally, Cropley filed a summary of the latest legal challenge to wind power development off the Northeast coast. A lengthy list of offshore wind opponents is suing four federal agencies and their top executives, saying their approval of the Revolution Wind and South Fork Wind proposals violated nine federal laws.

In non-wind news this past week:

  • The Diablo Canyon Power Plant in California became the first recipient of federal funding to shore up operations at U.S. nuclear plants on the verge of closure. Our Robert Mullin says plant owners Pacific Gas and Electric will receive $1.1 billion.

  • A Southern California Edison executive implored people to stop complaining about diminished community solar compensation, saying the old rates were “vastly inflated.”

  • Amazon crowned itself the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy for the fourth year in a row.

  • San Antonio will be one of the first U.S. cities to take advantage of the Inflation Reduction Act’s direct-pay mechanism as it secures 13 MW of solar power, The Energy Mix reports.

  • And Canary Media attempts to answer a question with large ramifications for the clean-energy industry: When will new nuclear plants start to come online in the United States? (Spoiler alert: No one knows.)

Amid spike in demand for Minnesota energy aid, here's how to get help paying your bill

A Minnesota program that helps people pay for their energy bills has seen record demand this year -- but it is still open to new applicants, state officials say. Since October, Minnesota's Energy Assistance Program has distributed more than $40 million to over 70,000 households. Program administrators are encouraging people to apply as soon as they can, since demand is high and there's less funding available than in the past few years. This article explains how to apply. NorthWestern touts coal, natural gas, in meeting record energy demand

And for more than five days, generation from coal fell to nearly half its capacity, according to EIA data for the same region and period. "It very much challenges and undermines the framing that fossil fuels run 24-7 and keep our lights on," said Karin Kirk, a science writer for NASA Climate and journalist for Yale Climate Connections. California

California's Oil Country Faces an 'Existential' Threat. Kern County Is Betting on the Carbon Removal Industry to Save It.

Kern County is the state's largest oil producer and a top producer of agricultural products, but climate change -- and the state's effort to mitigate it -- pose a threat to those economic mainstays. The county hopes the new carbon management industry will help make up for the hundreds of millions in tax revenue it anticipates losing by 2045, when California plans to phase out all oil drilling and eliminate most carbon emissions. OPINION: We need to talk about regulating 'solar farms' in Kansas

At nearly 3 a.m. Dec. 19 -- after eight hours of presentations, public comments and earnest discussion -- Douglas County planning commissioners could not agree on a permit application for what would be the largest utility-scale solar installation in the state of Kansas. The community should certainly be involved in the process, but the commission's role is only advisory. The fate of the Kansas Sky Energy Center is now in the hands of Douglas County's three commissioners who will make the final decision later this spring, writes C. Malcolm Ellsworth, a writer.
