When life hands you 300-year-old lemons… buy them. | Brettells Auctioneers and Valuers
|
Feb. 1, 2024
I don’t get some people. I really don’t.
A lemon, thought to be 285 years old and found in the back of a drawer, recently fetched £1,400 ($1,780) at an auction in England. Why is the lemon thought to be nearly 300 years old? Because it has “1739” inscribed into it. (Don’t ask me.) And apparently it is not the only ridiculously aged food to ever be found. But my question is, why? Why spend the $1,700 to own it?
Like, never mind the fact that this person just had two grand laying around to buy an old lemon, but what do they plan on doing with it? Is it something they are going to show off in their house like some fancy artwork? Are they going to tell its backstory (that they don’t even know) to friends? Did they lose a bet? Are they going to eat it? Now, I’d pay $10 to see that.
I just don’t get the satisfaction gained or the purpose for wanting to have it. Or maybe I am the one taking crazy pills.
