Records are meant to be broken. And while this next “humanity” record will probably be broken hundreds of times in the future, at this point in time it deserves some recognition.
Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko set a world record for total time spent in space on Sunday when he clocked in for his 879th day in the stars. Kononenko broke the record at 08:30 GMT, surpassing fellow Russian Gennady Padalka’s previous mark of 878.5 days. And he isn’t even close to being done yet. Kononenko’s fifth mission isn’t expected to end until September, when he will have passed 1,000 days (June) and ended with a total of 1,110 days.
Kononenko will have also gained some time when is current run is done as: Thanks to time dilation, he will be about 0.03 seconds younger than what he would have been had he never left Earth.
