It is like a Strong Man competition, but for horses. | Philip FONG

When Americans hear the term “horse racing,” we think of the Kentucky Derby, where horses sprint for more than a mile at top speeds. But that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to the Banei Keiba races in Japan.
Banei Horse Racing, known for being the “slowest horse race in the world,” focuses on technique, power and endurance as large draft horses pull a heavy iron sled down a track over obstacles. With the sled weighing as much as 1 ton, it is common for the horses to stop for a break over the course of 200 meters. No wonder all the drama comes during the last portion of the race when everyone is dead tired and struggling to take another step.
One thing the two race styles have in common is the betting, as the slow suspense still draws in bettors. That said, it’s not shocking considering people will always find something to gamble on.
