From the world of 3D printing comes arguably its greatest breakthrough yet: brain tissue.
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison successfully developed the first 3D-printed brain tissue that can grow and function like typical tissue. While previous methods have had limited success, this team’s idea to stack the printed layers horizontally instead of vertically allowed the cells and neurons to better grow, bind and communicate with each other. According to the researchers, the printed tissue could be used to study signaling between cells in those with Down syndrome; interactions between healthy tissue and neighboring tissue affected by Alzheimer’s; testing new drug candidates; or even just watching the brain grow.
The more we learn about the brain, the better.
