Ash Wednesday is today, which can only mean yesterday was ... well yes, it was Mardi Gras, but in other countries, it’s called Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day.
And in England, that means women partake in the annual Olney pancake race. At the start, the contestants must flip the pancakes in their skillets, sprint more than 400 yards to the finish line and flip their cake again. According to local legend, this festival has been held yearly since 1445. The town of Liberal, Kan., held its own competition for the 75th time as well, with some contestants having competed in the English race before.
In the spirit of feasting before the start of Lent, I feel like the contestants should also have to eat the pancakes to finish the race. Perhaps I will send in a suggestion for next year.
