Life found a way in a North Carolina aquarium, as a female round stingray has apparently become pregnant without a male partner. The stingray, named Charlotte, hasn’t shared a tank of water with a male of her species in at least eight years, yet she is said to be pregnant with as many as four pups. Scientists point to parthenogenesis, which is a form of reproduction where offspring develop from unfertilized eggs asexually. While the phenomenon has happened in other species, it is believed to be the first case for round stingrays. 

We will find out how healthy the babies are in about two weeks. Until then, let’s all just appreciate the wonders of life ... and that these animals won’t try to eat us once they get older.
