We lead off this week’s coverage of NetZero resources not with renewable energy but with a story on a key fossil fuel facility that must remain in operation a while longer, while the clean energy transition gains momentum.

Jon Lamson reports from Massachusetts on the fate of the Everett Marine Terminal, a major LNG import facility that faces closure due to retirement of its main customer, a gas-fired power plant. Eversource and National Grid have finalized contracts under which Constellation will keep the terminal open six more years to help maintain gas system reliability.

On the opposite side of the ledger — LNG exports — President Biden’s attempt to pause infrastructure expansion remains controversial: E&E News reported on congressional Republicans’ efforts to overturn the pause.

NetZero Insider’s John Cropley, meanwhile, has three new reports on the offshore wind energy sector:

  • Federal researchers activated a network of sensors off the New England coast that will gather water, wind and wildlife data in an effort to design wind energy installations that pose less of a threat to birds, bats and whales. In a related story, nola.com reported on the potential threat that the close-to-shore turbines being considered in Louisiana pose to birds.

  • Eversource Energy announced the sale of its share of the struggling joint venture it began with Ørsted in 2016, Eversource will take a $1.95 billion after-tax impairment for 2023. Reuters reported that Shell might drop out of the offshore wind tender in Norway for similar reasons.

  • Federal regulators have designated two wind energy areas for potential development off the Oregon coast. Extensive work remains to be done before any development can start, not least of which is perfecting the technology for the floating turbines that will be needed in the deep water there. Native News Online spoke to Tribal leaders who consider the potential development “green colonialism” in an area important to their people’s heritage.

Also in Oregon, K Kaufmann has a story on a tentative federal grant for a pilot geothermal project at a volcano. It is one of three projects that may receive a total of $60 million as the Department of Energy seeks to develop enhanced geothermal systems, a potentially significant source of emissions-free electricity.

Elsewhere, Think GeoEnergy reports that an Atlanta consulting firm won a contract from the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission to do a comprehensive analysis of that state’s geothermal resources.

Finally, Cropley tells us about an unwelcome source of heat: An engineering analysis firm reported on the results of more than 320 factory quality-control audits in six-plus years: 18% of the battery energy storage systems it inspected had issues with their thermal management systems and 26% with their fire detection and suppression systems.

Reuters covered a different potential problem with storage — national security. Under pressure from Congress, Duke Energy said it will remove Chinese-made batteries it installed at a Marine Corp base and will phase them out at its civilian projects, due to hacking risk.

NetZero resource news is covered from dozens more angles in the rest of this week’s Intelligence Report:

Cultivated meat could help decarbonize food. Florida wants to ban it

It's not very easy to get your hands on cultivated meat at the moment. In fact, even though U.S. regulators approved the sale of cultivated chicken for the first time last summer, today there are only two restaurants in the country where you can buy the futuristic product. Despite this limited availability, Florida, along with several other Republican-led states, is pursuing an outright ban on cultivated meat ever being sold in the state. Canary Media

Can We Invest in Solar Power Without Harming Nature?

For pronghorn, those antelope-like creatures of the American West, grassland north of Flagstaff is prime habitat. It gives the animals the food and conditions they need to survive fall and winter. But for a nation racing to adopt renewable energy, the land is prime for something else: solar panels. The good news for wildlife is that there are ways for solar developers to make installations less harmful and even beneficial for many species. But at this pivotal moment, as solar farms sprout across the country, those measures often go unused. The New York Times

Solar and battery storage to make up 81% of new U.S. electric-generating capacity in 2024

We expect a record addition of utility-scale solar in 2024 if the scheduled 36.4 GW are added to the grid. This growth would almost double last year's 18.4 GW increase, which was itself a record for annual utility-scale solar installation in the United States. Energy Information Administration

Solar and battery storage to make up 81% of new US electric-generating capacity in 2024

Developers and power plant owners plan to add 62.8 gigawatts of new utility-scale electric-generating capacity in 2024, according to our latest Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory. This addition would be 55% more added capacity than the 40.4 GW added in 2023 (the most since 2003) and points to a continued rise in industry activity. We expect solar to account for the largest share of new capacity in 2024, at 58%, followed by battery storage, at 23%. Energy Information Administration
