Swimming in icy water during the winter is nothing new. From local “polar plunges” to the International Ice Swimming Association, it feels like someone has always been jumping into freezing cold water somewhere. 

The town of Newport, Vt., has its own winter swimming competitions that are finishing up as you read this email. The 10th annual Memphremagog Winter Swimming Festival welcomed nearly 180 swimmers from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the U.K. to Lake Memphremagog, which straddles the northern border some 50 miles east of Montreal. It also boasts some of the “coldest water in the world.” 

The word “festival” is probably more accurate than “competition,” as a look at the daily itineraries shows a couple of events followed by cocktails and vodka shots. One wonders if that schedule should be flipped.
