Hello again from ERO Insider, bringing you all the news you need from the world of electric reliability! It’s been another busy week for our intrepid correspondents, so let’s check in and see what they’ve been working on.
NERC’s Reliability and Security Technical Committee (that’s a mouthful) met in San Diego this week, and Holden Mann was there to see the action. Click through for a look at the committee’s actions and NERC Trustee Sue Kelly’s praise for members’ work. (See NERC RSTC Briefs: March 12-13, 2024.)
The RSTC meeting also featured a presentation on fire safety in battery electrical storage systems from an experienced consultant in the space. Follow the link to hear why he says utilities have a lot of work to do to understand the unique challenges of these resources. (See RSTC Speaker Urges Industry Effort on BESS Safety.)
Staff from Texas Reliability Entity also discussed a new technology with a growing presence on the grid this week — this time, in the form of solar resources. Tom Kleckner was there for the Talk with Texas RE that focused on how to maintain reliability in light of these ongoing rapid changes. (See Solar’s Growth in ERCOT Requires Changes for IBRs.)
Finally, the New York State Reliability Council’s Executive Committee has sent out two new reliability rules for industry review. John Norris has more on how it hopes the new rules help prevent outages in the event of problems with the natural gas system during extreme weather. (See NY State Reliability Council Executive Committee Briefs: March 8, 2024.)
That’s all for now, but we’ll be coming at you all next week with more of the news you need from the ERO Enterprise and beyond. Keep checking back for updates, and we’ll have another newsletter headed your way next Friday! Have a great weekend!
