NetZero Insider’s coverage of resources had a forward-looking theme this week, with reports on future power generation portfolios, growth patterns and capacity additions.

K Kaufmann reports on a new analysis by the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie that indicates the United States could see its installed solar capacity nearly quadruple over the next 10 years — but only with the right combination of market and policy conditions. .

James Downing has a story from a NARUC forum at which three senior utility executives said natural gas and nuclear fission will be essential forms of electric generation for decades to come as the power industry decarbonizes.

A New Jersey Senate committee unanimously advanced a bill requiring utilities to upgrade their distribution infrastructure to handle increasing amounts of renewable energy generation seeking to connect to the grid, Hugh Morley reports.

New England’s efforts to decarbonize were dealt a blow as National Grid backed out of Twin States Clean Energy Link, a project proposed to import hydroelectric power from Quebec and export excess New England renewable energy to Canada. Jon Lamson notes that this type of bidirectional link could be increasingly important in coming decades as the demand for electricity increases and the supply becomes increasingly intermittent.

Finally, John Cropley reports that worldwide carbon dioxide emissions hit a new record high in 2023 but would have been even higher without the rapid adoption of clean energy, building decarbonization and electric vehicles. The data comes from the 2023 edition of the International Energy Agency’s annual CO2 emissions report.

Our curated content includes an article from The Christian Science Monitor questioning whether   wood pellets — a biomass fuel classified as a renewable energy source — are truly climate friendly. Carbon emissions from wood pellets are only counted at the point of combustion; the loss of trees and emissions from processing and transportation are not taken into account. The European Union leaned on biomass — much of it wood pellets from the American South — for about 60% of its renewable energy in 2019.

Rhode Island Current talks to New England officials about concerns that the high price of recent offshore wind contracts awarded in New York could drive prices sharply higher in New England states’ electricity solicitations.

Grist examines the assertion by Exxon Mobil’s CEO that his company is not to blame for the climate-impacting emissions of his company’s products; he says the fault lies with consumers who buy and burn those fuels.

And Public Citizen explains the differences in market structure and philosophy that led Texas to have the most wind generation of any state and California to have the most solar: California has supported homeowner-scale distributed generation with its policies while Texas is friendly to utility-scale projects and has substantial amounts of cheap land to site them.

Georgia Power's request for more electricity comes under fire

Georgia's energy regulators are considering Georgia Power's request to generate and buy more electricity to meet what the utility calls a surge in demand from new businesses in the state. State lawmakers, meanwhile, are grappling with a leading source of that increased power demand: high-tech data centers. Georgia Recorder

Maine

Many Maine Households Are Installing Climate-Friendly Heat Pumps

In 2023 heat pumps outsold gas furnaces in the United States for the second year running, a climate win. Electrical heat pumps are the cheapest and most energy efficient ways to heat and cool homes, and they do not emit the carbon pollution that is overheating the planet. No state has adopted them faster than Maine, spurred by a combination of state rebates on top of federal incentives and a new cadre of vendors and installers, as well as mounting frustrations over the high cost of heating oil. The SEC posted a Sunshine Act Notice -- which agencies are required to provide in advance of certain meetings that are open to the public -- on its website Feb. 28, confirming its plans to "consider whether to adopt rules to require registrants to provide certain climate-related information in their registration statements and annual reports." California utility regulator swats down community solar proposal

The California Public Utilities Commission on March 4 proposed rejecting a solar industry-backed proposal to allow renters to buy credits in small solar projects. Solar industry groups, ratepayer advocates and some environmental groups had pitched the proposal as a way to give renters access to the savings that people get from rooftop solar panels. The proposed decision found that the small generators that would have sold the credits are too different from rooftop solar owners to qualify for similar reimbursements. The agency offered a potential alternative that closely aligns with one introduced by utility Southern California Edison. E&E News

Baltimore Gas and Electric installs battery storage system to manage winter peaks

Maryland's largest utility, Baltimore Gas and Electric, has turned to a 2.5-MW/9.74-MWh battery energy storage system to meet high electricity demand during the winter months in Fairhaven, located just south of Annapolis. The battery system, which is installed at the Fairhaven substation near Chesapeake Bay and began operating in November, is built largely with Hitachi Energy products. It has two battery containers with 48 racks of lithium-ion batteries, the company said, as well as a control system and two new distribution transformers. pv magazine

What's driving the grid storage boom?

The country installed more than 5 gigawatts in 2022, up from less than 1 gigawatt of grid-scale energy storage in 2019. Not coincidentally, this growth is concentrated in states with high penetrations of renewable energy resources, with nearly three-quarters of capacity in California and Texas. Canary Media
