Happy Friday from ERO Insider, your window on the world of electric reliability! We hope those of you who live in the path of totality for Monday’s solar eclipse have a chance to get outside and see the sights — it should be a truly remarkable experience. Here in Atlanta we’re pretty far from totality, but according to eclipse simulators we’ve seen, it’s still going to be pretty neat. So no matter where you are, you should be able to get a nice show!
Speaking of nice shows, NERC CEO Jim Robb joined E-ISAC CEO Manny Cancel this week for their annual webinar to review some of the reliability challenges facing the grid and how the ERO is working to handle them. Holden Mann was on the call, and he’s got a look at their discussion of how new orders from FERC and Congress are affecting NERC’s workload, along with an assessment of the cyber and physical threat landscape. (See Robb, Cancel Review Reliability Landscape.)
This week also saw the release of NERC’s report on last year’s GridEx VII security exercise, which saw an estimated 15,000 participants across Canada and the U.S. Follow the link for a look at the structure of this year’s exercise and how it attempted to expose the grid’s vulnerabilities. (See NERC Flags Communication, Coordination in GridEx VII Report.)
Infrastructure owners are being asked to comment on a proposed rule to require cybersecurity incidents be reported to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Click through for more on the proposed rule and its potential impacts to grid owners and operators. (See CISA Seeks Comment on Proposed Cyber Reporting Rules.)
That’s all for today, but we’ll be back again next week with more news from the ERO Enterprise and beyond. Keep checking the website for all your news needs, and enjoy the eclipse on Monday if you have a chance!
