She’s still quackin'. | West Place Animal Sanctuary
|
April 4, 2024
A crested pekin duck at the West Place Animal Sanctuary in Rhode Island celebrated a monumental birthday (for ducks) this week.
Erna celebrated her 17th birthday on Monday, and no, it was not an April Fools’ joke. The duck was rescued in 2007 and has since helped the sanctuary raise a lot of its baby birds. With human life expectancy sitting around 71 years, and the average crested pekin life lasting 12 years, that means Erna is basically 100 years old in duck years. That sounds like a life well lived to me.
Erna still has a ways to go to catch a pair of ducks from South Africa, who supposedly lived to be 49 years old. But here’s to her making it as long as she can.
