Can you please clarify the term “drink"? | Guinness World Records

April 18, 2024

*** Apologies for the late email. I clicked the wrong date. Your understanding of my human error is much appreciated. ***

When I first saw the headline, “Man drinks at 120 bars in 24 hours to break world record,” I was impressed. After all, I am not sure that is something even my buddies or I could have pulled off back in our heyday. But after reading a little more, I quickly became not as impressed.

Sure, David Clarkson deserves credit for venturing to 120 Australian pubs in just 24 hours and downing a beverage at each establishment. The ability to go barhopping for a combined 20 hours (he took a four-hour nap) and drink at least 125 ml at each place merits at least a golf clap — especially for a 69-year-old. However, when I found out  he drank mostly sodas and juice, my clap slowed to a rubbing of my hands.

While I am not encouraging slamming beer after beer for 20 hours, I am saying it should have at least been 50/50. Show me your wherewithal to handle said beers. Show me your ability to mix in waters to keep your wavering sobriety. Show me how quickly you can make it through your 80 bathroom trips once you “break the seal.” Now, doing all that would have gotten him a clap like this
