I know I keep referencing Skynet in my artificial intelligence-related stories, and y’all probably think I’m joking (I am to a degree), but this next story is making it feel real.

The U.S. Air Force last week announced it staged a dogfight between a manned F-16 fighter jet and another controlled by an AI learning machine. The jets traveled at up to 1,200 miles per hour as they practiced defensive and offensive scenarios over California’s Edwards Air Force Base in September. During the flight, the AI analyzed data and made real-time decisions … a.k.a. machine learning … a.k.a. becoming smarter before it becomes “self-aware.” The Air Force did not say who won, which leads me to believe the AI did. 

The good news is regardless of what date you go with, we seemed to have made it past the ever-delayed “Judgment Day.” Then again, perhaps this is all just a part of the future timeline!
