E-ISAC CEO Manny Cancel speaks at FERC's Reliability Technical Conference in November 2023. | FERC

May 3, 2024

Welcome to another Friday newsletter from ERO Insider, your window on the world of electric reliability! We hope you’ve all been having a wonderful first week of May; we don’t know about you, but it’s always seemed like a magical month to us. Maybe it’s because it’s when schools let out for summer, or perhaps because the weather is warm enough for short sleeves but not unbearably hot and humid. It’s a shame European settlers largely left the custom of May Day behind, though apparently it’s still celebrated in some parts of North America.

Well, be that as it may (heh), let’s take a look at our bold reporters’ work from this week. First up: Manny Cancel, CEO of the Electricity Information Sharing and Analysis Center, announced that he will be stepping down next year after five years heading the organization. Holden Mann has more on his retirement, and that of Stan Hoptroff, the ERO’s business technology chief. (See NERC’s Cancel, Hoptroff to Retire in 2025.)

Public safety power shutoffs may come to Arizona for the first time this year, Elaine Goodman reports, because of the efforts of Arizona Public Service. Follow the link for more from the Arizona Corporation Commission’s summer preparedness workshop last week. (See Ariz. Looks to Public Safety Power Shutoffs to Prevent Wildfires.)

Comments are open on a set of proposed revisions to NERC’s Rules of Procedure that would change how the ERO conducts hearings and mediates disagreements between it and its regional entities. Click through for a rundown of the planned updates. (See NERC Seeks Comment on Changes to Mediation Procedures.)

Finally, the Twin Ridges wind farm in Pennsylvania will have to pay $30,000 to ReliabilityFirst under a penalty approved by FERC last week. Join us inside for a look at the reliability standard violations that prompted the settlement. (See RF Levies $30K Penalty for Twin Ridges Oversights.)

That’s all for today, but we’ll be here as usual all next week bringing you the news you need from the ERO Enterprise and beyond — including reports from the open meetings of NERC’s Board of Trustees and Member Representatives Committee. Be sure to check back throughout the week for those and other stories, and stay cool out there!
