The NetZero Insider team’s zero-emissions transportation news this week covers coast-to-coast funding increasing access to both light- and heavy-duty emissions-free vehicles.

K Kaufmann reports on EPA’s $932 million Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grants Program, designed to partially fund the transition to zero-emission vehicles for states, cities, territories and school districts. The funding covers two categories of vehicle: Class 6 (school buses, bucket trucks and some delivery vehicles) and Class 7 (transit buses, garbage trucks and street sweepers). EPA estimates such vehicles account for roughly 6% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

In Washington state, John Stang reports on financial aid for middle-income residents seeking to purchase or lease EVs. The program, funded by $45 million from the state’s cap-and-invest program, provides “instant rebates” of between $2,500 and $9,000 to buyers and leasers depending on a vehicle’s prior usage or the length of a lease.

To be eligible, an individual must make no more than $45,180 annually, while the cap is $93,600 for a family of four.

New England utility Eversource is pausing applications for electric vehicle charging rebates in Connecticut, the company said, citing state regulatory decisions that are “impeding the company’s ability” to fund the program. Namely, the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority announced the suspension of incentives for residential fast charging.

However, Oklahoma gave electric vehicle startup Canoo $15 million to construct a manufacturing plant in the state, Tulsa’s KOTV reports. The funding originated in the state’s Quick Action Closing Fund, designed to attract “high-impact” businesses to the state.

This week’s curation also includes:

  • Reuters’ coverage of lawsuits from half of U.S. states challenging EPA’s recent tailpipe emissions standards.

  • Quartz’s analysis of an IEA report saying that more than 20% of all vehicles sold worldwide this year will be electric.

  • Canary Media’s reporting on the insolvency of Tritium, an Australian EV charging equipment manufacturer with a factory in Tennessee.

All that and more in this week’s Intelligence Report:
