The Kentucky Derby is kind of like Christmas in that you wait a whole year for the day to come and it feels like it is over in a few minutes. But it is that aspect of the occasion that makes the special years memorable forever.

The 150th running of the Derby had a finish for the ages Saturday evening, as Mystik Dan (18-1 odds) edged out Sierra Leone and Forever Young by a literal nose. It took officials several minutes to review the tape and announce a winner in what was the closest three-horse photo finish since 1947. Fierceness, the betting favorite, finished 15th out of 20 to further prove no one has any idea of who is going to win these things. 

And just like that, horse racing fans and gamblers alike will have to wait until the next May for the sport’s biggest event. Fortunately, there are still two more legs of the Triple Crown to be had. THREE CHRISTMASES!
