New Zealand’s Huia bird has been extinct for about a hundred years, and that is probably why one of its feathers fetched an obscene amount of money at auction this week.

Webb’s Auction House reported a single feather from the bird went for $28,417 ($46,521.50 NZD), toppling the species' record by some 450%. The feather is registered as a taonga tūturu to protect Maori-made objects, and only collectors who had a license were allowed to purchase it. The feathers were important to the group and were often worn in headpieces by chiefs and their families. I’m not sure if that is where this feather came from, or if it was found decades ago on the ground somewhere, but either way, that is a lot of scratch for a bird feather.
