RTO Insider co-founder and COO Merry Eisner-Heidorn, 1957-2024 | RTO Insider LLC

June 3, 2024

RTO Insider co-founder and COO Merry Eisner-Heidorn, whose passion for children, public education and Philadelphia sports left a mark on all who knew her, died in Baltimore on May 28, just two months after learning she had lung cancer. She was 66.

Merry and her fellow co-founder, and husband, Rich Heidorn Jr. published the first issue of what was originally called PJM Insider in March 2013. Since then, the two built RTO Insider to cover all seven U.S. RTOs and ISOs, along with ERO Insider to cover NERC and NetZero Insider to cover state emissions policies.

To learn more about Merry’s life, please read her obituary, which also contains tributes from her family and employees. This article is free to access to all, regardless of whether you are a subscriber.

Merry’s legacy, RTO Insider, will continue to be your eyes and ears on the wholesale electricity markets as long as you keep reading:

  • A court of appeals has toppled Wisconsin’s longstanding ban on aggregators of demand response participating in wholesale markets. Amanda Durish Cook reports on that, along with …

  • … MISO saying that after its experience with its first long-range transmission portfolio, it no longer wants to open simple, conductor-only projects to its competitive bidding process, and …

  • … the RTO saying a riskier operating environment means it needs a more nuanced approach to its regulation reserve requirements.

  • NV Energy intends to join CAISO’s Extended Day-Ahead Market, an official with the utility confirmed, notching a major win for the ISO in its competition with SPP’s Markets+ day-ahead offering in the West. Robert Mullin has the story.

  • Vistra says it plans to add nearly 2 GW of gas-fired capacity to the ERCOT grid over the next year and seek loans through the Texas Energy Fund. Tom Kleckner breaks it down.

  • The burgeoning power demand from data centers and artificial intelligence can be met by other means than new natural gas-fired power plants, according to a new report from the Electric Power Research Institute. K Kaufmann has the details.

Lastly, we have news from other sources:

  • “Manchin Becomes an Independent, Leaving Options Open for Another Run,” The New York Times

  • “Vermont set to become first state in the nation to ‘make big oil pay,’” VT Digger
