We start this week’s NetZero Resources Intelligence Report with updates on offshore wind.

There were multiple developments in this promising but struggling U.S. power sector, and NetZero Insider’s John Cropley has coverage of four of them:

  • The Sierra Club commissioned an analysis that concluded adding 9 GW of offshore wind generation to the New England grid would reduce the average monthly residential electric bill by $2.79 to $4.61, despite the high cost of constructing wind farms, because they would reduce reliance on costly natural gas.

  • The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management completed an environmental assessment of three Central Atlantic wind energy areas and concluded the research work there would have no significant impact. This sets the stage for a wind lease auction expected in August.

  • The U.S. Department of Energy offered a progress report on the Floating Offshore Wind Shot: Since four federal agencies launched the initiative in September 2022, more than $950 million in funding has been allocated to it and more than 50 milestone achievements have been recorded.

Back on land, Cropley reports on a project that will replace a fossil-fired peaker plant with a battery energy storage system that will be the largest in New York City when completed in 2025 but may not hold the title for long, as other storage developers also are working to add capacity.

We have gathered the usual array of coverage from other media outlets, as well.

Nuclear power got a lot of attention this past week:

  • Some observers wonder if the steady stream of problems with the Georgia project will limit the American appetite for similar projects, The Washington Post reports.

In the “unlikely turnabout” category:

  • The Department of Energy hopes to offer leases of former nuclear weapons test sites for construction of solar projects totaling 400 MW capacity, pv Magazine reports.

  • The New York Times writes about Canada’s need to import rather than export electricity because of its faltering hydropower output

  • Saur Energy International looks at a report showing that some of the sunniest nations in the world are also among the slowest to add solar power generation capacity.

Finally, two stories that illustrate how far the clean energy industry has come:

  • The Salt Lake Tribune paid a visit to a Utah solar array that was the largest in the world when completed in 1980. It was rated at 100 kW then but produced about 60 kW; today it is rated at 60 kW and operates at around 47 kW.

  • The Independent reports that the new solar plant that is now the world’s largest has been connected to the grid in China’s Xinjiang province. It is spread across 200,000 acres, and its annual capacity is more than 6 billion kWh.

All this and much more is gathered in this week’s Intelligence Report:
