NetZero Insider’s transportation news this week is headlined by coverage of new fuel efficiency standards for cars and pickups.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s newly finalized standards will mandate annual 2% increases in fuel efficiency for new passenger vehicles from 2027 to 2031, requiring a 65.1-mpg standard in 2031, K Kaufmann reports. The new rules are aimed at reducing gas consumption by 70 billion gallons and carbon emissions by 710 million metric tons by 2050. The standards are intended to complement EPA’s new stricter standards on tailpipe emissions, as the Biden administration works toward its goal for electric vehicles to comprise half of all vehicle sales by 2030.

This effort has attracted significant pushback from the fossil fuel industry; oil and gas lobbying groups filed multiple lawsuits this week against the EPA’s new vehicle emissions standards, The Hill reports.

Backed by millions in ad spending from the fossil fuel industry, the Trump campaign and its allies have made the Biden administration’s vehicle electrification push a main issue in the upcoming election, according to The Associated Press.

In a setback for EVs in Connecticut, the state’s largest utility announced its plans to suspend its participation in an EV rebate program, the latest chapter in the spat between the state’s utilities and their regulators, the Hartford Courant reports. As regulators work to implement a new performance-based regulation framework, the utilities have complained about regulatory uncertainty. The state’s governor said it is time to “lower the temperature.”

Meanwhile, the decarbonization of rail transportation has been slow to get rolling; the industry faces no clear path to net-zero emissions, with electrified and alternative-fuel options still in the early testing phases.

All that and more in this week’s Intelligence Report:
