In a discovery that sheds new light on the personal life of America’s first president, archaeologists recently unearthed bottled remnants of George Washington’s cherished cherry trees at his Mount Vernon estate.
Six storage pits containing 35 bottles of cherries and berries — almost impossibly preserved in the dirt in the mansion’s cellar on the banks of the Potomac River — were discovered during an archaeological dig connected to a $40 million restoration project. The bottles are thought to be at least 250 years old and are “essentially unprecedented” considering the quality of preservation.
The Department of Agriculture is examining some of the cherry pits to see if any can be planted, but it seems like a longshot. It would be nice to replace some of the cherry trees that were lost along the way, though.
