Swimming in the Baltimore Harbor has never been the wisest decision. Even with constant monitoring by the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, swimming is not recommended outside of planned events such as the “Harbor Splash” — which took place at a location that was given an “F” for water quality.

None of that mattered to Baltimorean Katie Pumphrey, who swam 24 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, up the Patapsco River and into the Inner Harbor. Pumphrey set off a little after 3 a.m. on Tuesday and touched a harbor wall some 14 hours later, becoming the first person to complete such a swim. It might have just been another ho-hum day for Pumphrey, who has already swum both the English and Catalina channels and around Manhattan. 

As someone who lives 25 minutes from the harbor, you go for the sights and the sounds, and not so much to gaze into the water (if you catch my drift). That said, here’s a “Charm City salute” to Pumphrey ... and to the Harbor for maybe not being that bad to a human's health.
