NetZero Insider’s transportation decarbonization news for this week featured coverage by Ayla Burnett of California’s efforts to develop a workforce to support zero-carbon vehicles.

Government officials have stressed the importance of a strong workforce pipeline to the overall success of the clean energy transition and are putting a particular focus on creating living-wage, high-skilled jobs for disadvantaged communities.

In other California transportation news, the state announced a new program that would offer up to $14,000 for low-income residents to purchase an electric vehicle. These incentives could be layered on top of a $7,500 federal rebate from the Inflation Reduction Act.

This week also featured a couple stories on the challenging rollout of EV infrastructure:

  • While Florida is eligible for nearly $200 million in federal funding for EV charging infrastructure over the next five years, it has yet to make this funding available to businesses.

  • A consulting group estimated that EV and data center growth will increase U.S. power demand by 300 TWh by 2030, an approximately 7.5% increase over current levels.

In business news, Volkswagen announced plans to invest $5 billion in a software partnership with American EV company Rivian, which is intended to help lower vehicle costs.

In international news, Chinese Premier Li Qiang criticized new U.S. and European Union tariffs on Chinese EVs and EV batteries. Li said the low costs of EVs in China are because of economies of scale and early investments, but “eventually Chinese cars will come to North America.”
