In a remarkable journey of resilience and hope, a cancer survivor has found a new voice — literally and figuratively.

Marty Kedian, a 59-year-old Massachusetts man, recently became the first cancer patient in the U.S. to successfully receive a larynx transplant. On Feb. 29, six surgeons at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona operated for 21 hours on Kedian, who was diagnosed with a rare laryngeal cartilage cancer about 10 years ago. Roughly three weeks later, he said “hello.” For a man known to have long conversations with strangers, one word was as good as a thousand. 

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 12,600 people will be diagnosed with some form of laryngeal cancer this year. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a new medical procedure than can save more lives.
