NetZero Insider’s transportation coverage kept moving this week with a story by Hugh Morley on the reopening of a $50 million electric vehicle incentive program in New Jersey, which will offer up to $4,000 off an EV for low- and moderate-income buyers.

The program coincides with a new fee on EVs in the state, intended to make up for lost gas tax revenue. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) also recently ended sales tax exemptions for EVs, spurring criticism from advocates.  EV sales accelerated in New Jersey in 2023, and the state has set a goal of reaching 330,000 EVs on the road by the end of 2025.

South of Jersey, Maryland also has a new registration fee for EVs to help address budget shortfalls and counterbalance lost gas taxes.

Maryland also announced plans for 23 charging stations across the state, making use of 12 million in federal funding. The stations are set to come online by fall 2025.

In Ohio, which already has a registration fee for EVs and hybrids, gas tax revenues have held strong, and Gov. Mike DeWine (R) is considering increasing the gas tax to pay for future infrastructure projects.

In national news, the U.S. Treasury announced that EV customers have made use of more than $1 billion in point-of-sale subsidies. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized the maintenance and fuel savings associated with electric vehicles, saying they will save customers about $20,000 over the life of the vehicle.

As the industry grows, Tesla’s share of the EV market has declined by about 10% in the past year and is now slightly below 50%, falling below this threshold for the first time. EV sales across the industry in the U.S. grew by 11% over the past year, according to research firm Cox Automotive.

In heavy-duty vehicle news, a new report on an electrified commercial vehicle pilot project found that the vehicles can perform well but will need better charging infrastructure. The report also noted that utility charging assumptions are often unrealistic compared to real-life operations.

Meanwhile, a new study by researchers at Stanford and Arizona State University underscores the importance of heavy-duty vehicle electrification. The study found that California must retire existing heavy-duty combustion vehicles prior to the end of their typical lifespan to meet the state’s emissions mandates and prevent excess deaths attributed to air pollution.
