In this day and age of technology, it is hard to find things like VHS tapes, audio cassettes and floppy disks. Well, that is unless you are operating a German warship.
“Augen geradeaus!” — a German defense and security policy blog by journalist Thomas Wiegold — recently published a post noting the replacement of floppy disks used for a ship’s onboard data acquisition systems. The Brandenburg-class F123 frigates were commissioned between 1994 and 1996 and have continued to use the outdated system because it is considered “more reliable.” I’m not sure something is more reliable just because it is more familiar, but hey, some people really hate change.
However, while I poke at the German military, it was only in 2019 that the U.S. Air Force stopped using the 8-inch disks for storing missile network data. I mean, don’t make it hard on Skynet or anything …
