Sharks are already given a bad rap for their seemingly constant aggressiveness, and unfortunately, this next news will not do anything to alleviate that stigma.
Scientists in Brazil recently published results that found 13 sharpnose sharks taken from the Rio de Janeiro area had traces of cocaine in their muscles and livers. Even more alarming is the fact the drug concentrations were as much as 100 times higher than previously reported in other water animals. Cocaine has been detected in sewage and rivers in many South American countries, and is presumed to enter the water via drainage from illegal labs. Unfortunately, this is just the latest example of human drugs affecting animals.
Ironically, Shark Week had just done a special on “cocaine sharks” and whether species in the Gulf of Mexico have been influenced by the narcotic. Now it doesn’t seem so far-fetched as it initially did.
