Since the end of World War II, when North Korea and South Korea separated, the two nations have had an extremely tense relationship, to say the least. It hasn’t gotten any better, as earlier this year North Korea voted to end all economic cooperation with its southern neighbor. So, if there were ever countries you did not want to confuse with one another, it would be these two.
It just so happens there was a major, worldwide competition beginning this week in which all the competing nations were announced and recognized as they floated along the Seine River in Paris. It was then that English and French commentators for the opening ceremony welcomed South Korea as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” … which is the official name for North Korea. Eeesh. South Korea is officially the Republic of Korea.
There aren’t many public, global opportunities to make a screw up like this, but given a chance, it never fails. The IOC and everyone involved have since apologized, but it’s hard to put that slap back in the box. Here’s hoping South Korea wins some gold medals to ease the sting. And it seems like they are off to a good start.
