I don’t really take the time to get caught up in court cases because they usually aren’t worth arguing about and doing so will get you nowhere. However, when a case comes along that seems like a slam dunk but is ruled in the opposite direction, I can’t help but offer my two cents.
An Ohio man recently tried suing a restaurant and a food provider after he developed a severe infection in his throat that was caused by a chicken bone tearing his esophagus. The issue centers around the fact that the man ordered boneless wings and, rightfully so, figured there was no bones to worry about. Yet, somehow the state’s Supreme Court ruled 4-3 in favor of dismissing the case, with the majority saying “boneless wings” is a cooking style and the man should’ve been on guard because it’s “common knowledge” that chickens have bones. Right. Just like it’s common knowledge that wireless phones have wires, sleeveless shirts have sleeves and headless horseman actually have heads.
People can try and argue the difference between the meaning of bone-less and bone-free, but it’s just semantics. When I give my kids chicken fingers, I don’t worry about them biting into a bone. And if they did, you can best believe there would be a problem.
