Most people, including myself, can usually tolerate insects if there are only a handful of them around. However, it is when those “few” turn into “tens”, “hundreds” or “thousands” that we end up running for shelter.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much shelter for Rhode Island beachgoers this past weekend when a gigantic swarm of dragonflies invaded the Misquamicut Beach in Westerly. Videos on social media showed dragonflies by the thousands flying over the beach as people just sat and took cover for the most part. I will say dragonflies have less of a negative stigma than say bees, cicadas or mosquitoes in the sense that they don’t really bother you. That said, when there are thousands of something, even the most indifferent creature can become overwhelming. 

As someone who doesn’t get along well with the sun, I’d take a swarm of dragonflies over a sunburn any day.
