NetZero Insider’s transportation decarbonization coverage for this week featured an update from Hugh Morley on the growth of electric vehicles and charging in New Jersey.

Ralph LaRossa, CEO of Public Service Enterprise Group, said EVs are increasing steadily, with the state adding more than 60,000 last year. He added that EV charging needs and new data centers will likely drive significant load growth in the coming years, and said he expects the trend to continue even if former President Donald Trump is elected again in November.

In Indiana, an alliance of Black organizations is calling on the state Department of Transportation to put a greater focus on equity when deploying federal money for EV charging infrastructure.

In international news, a new report found that China is both the top producer and innovator in the EV industry. The report’s author said the U.S. is “at risk of losing this industry — or at least losing the EV competitiveness — and we need effective public and private investment to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Meanwhile, a Japanese company claims to have found a way to significantly improve the performance of EV batteries in both extreme cold and hot weather by using a new electrolyte.

In trucking news, major truck producers are investing in research into hydrogen combustion engines in a quest to decarbonize. Electrification and fuel cells both pose unique challenges for the industry, and some truckmakers see hydrogen combustion engines as a cheaper solution.

Finally, Amazon announced that it has deployed more than 15,000 electric delivery vans, and is targeting 100,000 by 2030.

All that and more in this week’s Intelligence Report:

Gretchen Whitmer is all-in on EVs. But state's fleet is almost all gas powered

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants the state's own car and light-truck fleet to convert to zero-emission vehicles by 2033. The state only had 10 EVs when a plan to reach 100% was released in early June. Funding remains an issue, with $1 million per year planned and the rest unbudgeted and undetermined. Bridge Michigan
