I’m not a big soccer fan, but I do pay attention two years out of every four: the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the Summer Olympics. This is for two reasons. For one, I can’t stand all the dives the men’s teams take. It becomes less about who can better control the ball and more about who can better fake an injury. 

That’s not an original or new take, and it’s long been mocked, I know. Which brings me to my next reason: The U.S. women’s team has consistently been among the best in the world, and they’re truly fun to watch. While the U.S. was swiftly ousted by Morocco in the men’s knockout stage in the 2024 Paris Olympics, yesterday our gals beat Germany to make it to the women’s gold medal game this Saturday against Brazil, which beat Spain. 

This is our first gold-medal game since 2012, when we beat Japan — after they had beat us in the 2011 World Cup. At the very least, this is a marked improvement over last year’s World Cup, when we didn’t even make it out of the round of 16. Those of you on the West Coast will have to get up early to watch, though: The match starts at 5:30 p.m. in Paris — meaning 8:30 a.m. for you!
