American speed climber Sam Watson set the record for speed climbing at the Paris Olympics this week with a time of 4.75 seconds. In looking up the achievement online, I came across an article titled, “The Most Gruesome 4.75 Seconds at the Olympics,” which immediately made me think there would be a video of some kind of horrible accident. No, it’s just an interesting look at how brutal the sport is on the human body.

But, I thought, I still have an email to write for tonight. So I tried looking for a humorous or unusual accident that did occur, only to find an article about doctors reporting a spate of injuries tied to people imitating Olympic athletics. Many are apparently common pulls and bruises from people taking back up a sport they used to play when they were younger (and fitter) after watching it get played at the Olympics. Understandable.

Others are unusual. And some are just plain dumb. One doctor reported treating “a man who, after watching the skateboarding, jumped onto his son’s skateboard and very quickly fell off, landing on his wrist and arm to break his fall.” I do sympathize somewhat with the injury itself (long story) ... but c’mon, man.

I can safely say, though, that no one was injured in the production of these RTO Insider stories.

Have a great weekend!
