NetZero Insider’s transportation reporting featured coverage by Hugh Morley on New Jersey’s plan to spend more than $300 million on two facilities for electric buses. NJ Transit aims to cut all emissions from its 2,300-bus fleet by 2040 but has only eight electric buses in service.

The projects will be funded by a combination of federal and state money. NJ Transit CEO Kevin Corbett said the agency hopes to develop a “state-of-the-art facility” to serve as “a model for cost-effective, sustainable bus operations across New Jersey.”

Environmental organizations have criticized the state for underfunding the agency’s effort to decarbonize heavy duty transit. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles make up a small portion of the vehicles in the state, but account for about a quarter of the emissions.

In other public transportation news, Detroit launched a free, self-driving electric shuttle in the city’s downtown.

Meanwhile, free at-home charging could be possible for some Texas residents. Ford and TXU Energy announced a “Free EV Miles” program that would allow drivers of Ford EVs to charge their vehicle for free during off-peak hours.

In international news, EV battery fires in South Korea have prompted the government to review its safety measures for batteries and charging infrastructure. The country is calling on car companies to disclose the manufacturers of the batteries used in their vehicles. One commentator speculated that a major Mercedes-Benz EV fire in South Korea could lead to increased global scrutiny into battery safety.

In Europe, U.K. automotive supplier Dowlais Group said European countries must reintroduce EV subsidies in order to meet the region’s decarbonization targets.

Finally, an analyst for the Union of Concerned Scientists looked at the potential for refurbishing and reusing EV batteries at the end of their life. Some batteries have the potential to be reused in vehicles or as stationary storage, although refurbished or repurposed batteries typically are more expensive than new batteries.
