This week’s Resources Intelligence Report leads off with big news in the West — geographically big news.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has issued its roadmap for solar development on 31 million acres in the 11 westernmost states. John Cropley reports that some clean energy industry groups are disappointed at the amount of open space excluded from consideration in the final plan.

Also out West, Elaine Goodman covers the California Public Utilities Commission approval of a central procurement plan for up to 10.6 GW of clean energy resources, including 6 GW of nameplate capacity in offshore wind and 1 GW each in geothermal, multiday energy storage and 12-hour energy storage.

Back East, Cropley talks to National Grid about its Upstate Upgrade, a package of transmission improvements across northern New York that is at once impressively large and yet only a fraction of what will be needed to accommodate the state’s ambitious clean energy ambitions.

Speaking of impressive and ambitious projects, how about bringing a mothballed nuclear plant back online as a source of emissions-free power? Holtec is undertaking the first such effort in U.S. history at its Palisades station in Michigan, and our Amanda Durish Cook has the details.

Finally, James Downing breaks down a new report by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on distributed solar systems. There are now 3.7 million nationwide, and in the past two decades, their average efficiency has increased by two-thirds while their median output has more than tripled.

Beyond our in-house reporting, we have gathered a particularly diverse assortment of news from other media outlets, including:

  • Pv magazine has a story on a self-storage operator agreeing to the installation of 100 MW of solar capacity on the rooftops of 1,000 sites in 42 states.

All this and much more is gathered in this week’s Intelligence Report:
