If it was still up for debate, it was officially settled this past weekend. Joey Chestnut, the American hero, is unequivocally better than Japan’s Takeru Kobayashi when it comes to eating hot dogs.
Netflix hosted a contest for its Labor Day Special, pitting the two against each other in “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef.” While the rules were slightly different from Nathan’s Famous annual July 4th contest, the contestants still had 10 minutes to put down as many dogs-in-buns as possible. Chestnut went on to win in a landslide, 83-67, and bested his own world record of 76 (2021) in the process. Amazing and gross at the same time.
Despite the loss, it is hard to knock Kobayashi, who brought the sport into the spotlight and reigned supreme as the champion from 2002 to 2007. His only problem was that he ran into the Patrick Mahomes of his era, as Chestnut went on to win the contest every year but one over the next 17 years.
