New Zealand has a new favorite bird.
The hoiho, or yellow-eyed penguin, was named the nation’s “Bird of the Year” this week after a staunch campaign to raise awareness of its endangered status. The win is less about the mere 1% of the country’s population that participated in the vote and more about the species’ vastly declining numbers (78% in the past 15 years). The karure, which has made a real-life statistical comeback of its own, came in second.
If I were to nominate a “bird of the year” in the U.S., it would probably be the raven. Lord knows people in Baltimore are trying to find them right now.
