Remember in the late 1990s and early 2000s when the world became mortified about the depleting ozone layer and thought we were eventually going to be cooked alive? Well, we are still here (albeit approaching a medium-well state), and the layer appears to be recovering.

The World Meteorological Organization released a bulletin on Sept. 16 on World Ozone Day that stated the ozone layer “is on the road to recovery” and could be return to 1980 levels by 2066. The message said “if” current policies remain in place, the layer over Antarctica is expected to recover by 2066, above the Arctic by 2045 and the rest of the planet by 2040. This is mostly thanks to the Montreal Protocol, which regulates the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances. At least there is one thing the world can agree on. 

Ozone or no ozone, I’m still getting sunburned in about 25 minutes. But I am glad it will help everyone else.
