Hello again from ERO Insider! We hope all of our readers in the Southeast are safe and well after Hurricane Helene struck last weekend. With more than 200 people now known to have died — over half in North Carolina — the cost of the storm is only beginning to be felt. Our hearts go out to all those affected.
Now to this week’s stories, starting with an update on NERC’s ride-through standard for inverter-based resources. Currently the ERO is wrapping up a ballot round for the standard that closes today and hoping it will be the last time industry needs to vote on it. Holden Mann has more on the latest developments after the jump. (See Re-ballot Underway for IBR Ride-through Standard.)
After more than three years, FERC turned down a complaint from security activist Michael Mabee this week that called for audits of all grid equipment manufactured in China and updates to NERC’s cybersecurity standards. Click through to see why the commission finally said the measures were unnecessary in light of the ERO’s existing requirements. (See FERC Rejects Mabee’s 2021 Supply Chain Complaint.)
FERC has also approved settlements between ReliabilityFirst and PPL Electric, and between NPCC and Constellation Energy, carrying a total price tag of almost half a million dollars. Follow the link for details on the utilities’ violations of NERC reliability standards. (See FERC Approves $490K in Penalties for NERC Violations.)
Regulators are watching a growing trend of pairing data centers with clean energy resources as they worry about the impact at a time when electrification and climate goals are increasing clean-energy demand. Elaine Goodman was on hand for the discussion at a WECC webinar, and she’s got more details inside. (See Regulators Worry Data Centers Consume Too Much Clean Energy.)
That’s going to do it for now! Thanks so much for joining us, and please keep coming back for the latest news throughout the week.
