NetZero Insider’s transportation coverage for this week was headlined by two stories by Hugh Morley, which touched on emissions from the cargo transportation industry and New Jersey’s work to deploy EV charging infrastructure.

Throughout the country, cargo transportation companies are working to cut emissions from refrigerated containers and trucks that carry produce, frozen food, pharmaceuticals and other goods, Hugh reported. Transport refrigeration units typically pollute more than trucks and frequently emit concentrated pollution in vulnerable communities that are burdened with poor air quality. Companies within the sector are shifting from diesel to hybrid and electric refrigeration systems, and are also working to cut emissions by improving supply chain efficiency.

Hugh also covered the New Jersey Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee’s move to  advance legislation that would limit electric utilities’ ability to impose peak demand charges on commercial direct current fast chargers. The bill is intended to reduce commercial charging rates and barriers to charger deployment. It was supported by Democratic lawmakers along party lines, who expressed hope that it would reduce charging costs for commercial electric vehicle users.

In other transportation news, an investment firm is partnering with the Biden administration to launch a $1 billion fund intended to support small and medium-sized companies with supply chain challenges for electric vehicles and help the development of new EV technology for drivers.

In California, the deployment of charging stations for electric trucks has been held up by significant grid constraints. EV advocates argue that a recent ruling by the California Public Utilities Commission does not do enough to expedite the grid upgrades needed to scale up the state’s charging infrastructure.

Despite the difficulties, the state does appear to be making some progress on its emissions. A new report from the California Air Resources Board found that carbon emissions fell by 2.4% in the state, which coincided with a spike in EV ownership in the state. The board noted that the drop in emissions in the state in recent years has also coincided with a significant increase in GDP.

All that and more in this week’s Intelligence Report:
