Crocodiles have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, so it stands to reason that they are one of the greatest organisms the planet has ever seen when it comes to evolution and longevity.
Henry is a prime example of that. The Nile crocodile, which now lives at the Crocworld Conservation Centre in South Africa, is estimated to be 123 years old — making him the oldest living croc on Earth. Henry is about 16-and-a-half feet long and weighs 1,500 pounds … or basically a small boat that can swallow you in about three chomps. Even seeing him through this video, and not up close and personal, is breathtaking when you consider his size and girth compared to the presenter. And their bodies can regulate themselves, so they can go more than a year without eating. Simply remarkable.
One study credited the microbiome in a crocodile’s stomach as a main reason the species can live so long. That, and a lack of fast food?
