The MLB Playoffs began yesterday with the Wild Card round. I know I’ve had a few baseball emails in recently, but if you guys know me, you know I like to make (mostly incorrect) playoff predictions.
The American League seems as open as ever. It wouldn’t shock me to see any team make it to the ALCS. Well, maybe the Detroit Tigers (who are now 1-0). But then again, if you make the dance, anything can happen (see: last two NLCS with the No. 6 seeds winning). In a perfect world, I’d love to see Baltimore play Philadelphia in the World Series. The problem is the O’s have seemed “off” for the last two months (and they are down 0-1). I’ll take the Cleveland Guardians, who quietly have the second-best record in the AL. Oh, and they had the lowest bullpen ERA in all of baseball. That wins in October.
Everyone knows where I am going in the NL, but I must make sure to write these next words carefully (they are listening). Two years ago, the Phillies qualified for the playoffs on the third to last day of the season. They then mustered just two hits heading into the ninth inning in Game 1 of the Wild Card series before scoring six runs to win the game. From there a magical run was sparked that culminated in a World Series appearance. Last year, the magic turned to nightmare, as they dropped two in a row at home to lose the NLCS. Now, we are one of, if not the, best team in baseball with unfinished business. 2008 was 16 years ago already. The time is now.
