Who said violent anime cartoons can’t teach you some things? After all, that is where 23-year-old Karin Ryo learned the headlock she used to subdue a would-be shoplifter in Yokohama last month.

Ryo, a typical office worker, was at a convenience store on Sept. 16 when she noticed a confrontation at the front door. A man was trying to get away with a six-pack, and the store’s clerk had confronted him. Seeing the clerk needed help, Ryo took the thief to the ground and proceeded to put him in a headlock. There Ryo stayed, withstanding bites on her arms, until the police arrived to apprehend the perp. 

Ryo said she never took martial arts lessons but does watch anime and “just sort of imitated what I’ve seen in it.” So, in other words, don’t try it at home … unless someone is getting robbed.
