NetZero Insider’s transportation coverage for this week focused on the major expansion of charging infrastructure that will be needed to enable vehicle electrification. In a new report, the Edison Electric Institute increased its forecast for U.S. light-duty EV adoption along with its projection for charging infrastructure needed to support these new vehicles, John Cropley reports.

While the EV industry growth has fallen short of some automaker’s expectations this year, EEI still projects steady growth through 2035. The trade association estimates that there will be 78.5 million EVs on the road in 2035, requiring 42.2 million charge ports.

In news from other sources, California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have required auto manufacturers to recycle EV batteries. Newsom said he supported the bill’s aim but that it would put too much of a burden on the state’s Department of Toxic Substances and Control.

In international news, a European Union vote on imposing tariffs of up to 45% on Chinese EVs fell short, but the European Commission is still planning to proceed with the tariffs. Germany, the biggest car producer in the region, opposed the move.

The new tariffs follow those imposed on Chinese EVs and vehicle components in the U.S. and Canada. This week, China filed an appeal with the World Trade Organization over Canada’s tariffs, arguing that they will “disrupt and distort” global supply chains.

The tariffs may have been a factor in Tesla’s elimination of its cheapest EV option, which featured lithium iron phosphate battery cells from China. The company’s cheapest option now comes in at $42,500.

Tesla also fell short on third-quarter deliveries compared to Wall Street’s projections, although deliveries were still up by 6.4% over the preceding quarter. However, the company would need a major fourth-quarter rally to avoid recording its first annual drop in deliveries. Tesla has struggled with increasing competition in several key markets across the globe.

Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia launched a collaboration to develop lithium iron phosphate battery cathode material manufacturing technology, with the hope of reducing battery costs and improving performance.

In mass-transit news, Hydrogen Fuel News reported on some of the factors that have delayed the development of hydrogen trains in Germany, including limited fuel availability, high costs and the lack of infrastructure to transport the fuel.

All that and more in this week’s Intelligence Report:
