Creating change in a stagnant environment is not easy. It takes “attitude and action,” as well as time. In Helio da Silva’s case, he has a lot of all three.
Da Silva is credited with creating the 2-mile-long, 330-foot-wide Tiquatira Linear Park in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He started in 2004 when he planted 200 trees along a small stream in a derelict area. After those trees were quickly uprooted and destroyed, he planted 400 more. After those were vandalized again, da Silva went full “attitude and action” … and planted 5,000 as quickly as he could. From then on he hasn’t stopped, as the park now boasts 41,000 trees. And da Silva said he won’t stop until there are 50,000. Good luck uprooting all of those.
With most of the world fixated on instant gratification nowadays, I can only imagine the feeling of pride da Silva must feel seeing his 20-year emotional, physical and monetary investment come to fruition.
